Dear Parents and Carers
At St Mary’s, we aim to provide a happy, healthy, safe, supportive and stimulating environment, promoting achievement for all and celebrating success. I am particularly proud of the work being done in all classes to promote the 5C’s, which reinforces the Gospel message to “treat others as you would like to be treated”. All staff work together to provide an education which is both enjoyable and challenging and which meets the needs of all of our pupils. Over the past few years schools across Scotland have been implementing Curriculum for Excellence and we will continue to develop our curriculum working closely with Midlothian Council.
St Mary’s RC Primary is at the heart of a thriving Community in Bonnyrigg and enjoys good links with the Catholic Church of Our Lady with our Parish Priest Father Allan Ocdenaria.
This year our Parent Council has plans to maintain the fund raising achieved last session to support our move to the new building at Easter 2020. If you would like to get involved then contact your class rep on the Parent Council. There are regular newsletters home from the Parent Council too, so look out for these in your child’s book bag. We have many Parent Helpers in the school and if you can spare any time for whatever purpose, I would be delighted to have a chat with you. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to me either in the playground, or any time you are visiting the school.
A key priority for improvement this session is to raise attainment in Literacy particularly in writing in P5/6/7. We are using new resources for literacy called Read Write Inc to teach phonics and early reading skills in P1/2/3. Our teachers are working collaboratively across the St David’s Learning Community to focus on quality lessons and quality learning in every class. We have developed a comprehensive transition programme with St David’s High School over a number of years. As always we have a number of teaching and CCDW students working in the school throughout the year and we value the contributions they make to your child’s learning experiences.
As last year the children are placed in either ST Margaret’s or ST Andrew’s House. Having PE kit, letters returned, money paid to school on time will all earn house points for your child. Reward cards in class recognise when your child is making progress in learning, and children will be rewarded for good behaviour in school if they stay on green each term. We have organised the children into Teams for Golden Time. We have action plans for each of the Pupil Groups in the school so look out for information about events and competitions coming home regularly.
Our twitter feed will keep you up to date with the activities in each class and key events and competitions.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the School Office if you have any queries and look out for information coming home from school via the book bag.
